Route 2. Path to the Santillana Reservoir

Following this short, easy route, you’ll pass through the historic centre and, after crossing the ‘Montañero roundabout’ and walking along Calle de La Paz, you’ll reach the viewpoint overlooking the Santillana Reservoir.

From where you are, it’s a 10-minute walk to the viewpoint; once you’ve crossed the bridge, the panoramic view is “spectacular” – undoubtedly one of the most breathtaking in the world. The granite massif of La Pedriza lies ahead (featuring the second and third highest peaks in the Community of Madrid after Peñalara: Cabezas de Hierro Mayor and Menor).

You can walk around the reservoir for 2 km; at the end, you’ll come to the gate of a private estate and will have to return along the same path (it’s not a circular route). The reservoir is one of the main sites for the conservation, nesting and migration of waterbirds in the Community of Madrid.

Both swimming and boating (even without a motor) are prohibited, as it supplies drinking water to Madrid. Only recreational fishing is permitted.
