Festivals in Manzanares El Real

Manzanares El Real is a lively town with traditions that hold deep meaning for its people, which we certainly know how enjoy. Here are the main festivals that take place every year and form part of our identity.

Pentecost Feast of the Virgin of Peña Sacra

This historic celebration begins at dusk on the first Saturday of Pentecost, the seventh Sunday after Easter, when the Virgin is carried from her hermitage to the parish church. Residents gather near the Old Castle, around a granite rock known as La Piedra. There, they sing the Salve to welcome the Virgin, and a procession begins towards the church, led by the Brotherhood’s banner and accompanied by a music band.

Upon arrival, a floral offering takes place, followed by Holy Mass and the singing of the hymn in honor of the Virgin. Afterwards, dancing fills the town square and continues until dawn.

On Pentecost Sunday, the High Mass is celebrated, followed by a procession through the main streets of the town. Festivities in the square with music and dancing continue in the afternoon.

Finally, on Pentecost Monday, the image of the Virgin returns in procession to her hermitage, followed by a traditional Romería (pilgrimage) in the meadow by Canto Redondo.

Feast of Nuestra Señorade las Nieves (Summer Festival)

On August 5, the day of Nuestra Señora de Las Nieves is celebrated with a High Mass in her honor. In the days before and after, the town comes alive with festive events such as the election of the festival queen and her court, the Transhumance Festival, sports competitions, Boloencierros (running of the bulls with giant balls), exhibitions, major concerts, and much more.

On the final day, the community gathers for the traditional stew of bull with potatoes, cooked for the occasion and shared in the town square.

Feast of the Cristo de la Nave

These are the town’s patron saint festivities, held in mid-September. They include sports competitions, concerts, and dancing, with activities especially aimed at families and seniors.

On September 14, a High Mass is celebrated with a floral offering, followed by a procession through the main streets of the town. After the religious ceremony, locals share lemonade in the square. The evening continues with music and dancing late into the night.

Noche de San Juan (Enramadas)

On June 23, Manzanares El Real celebrates a unique version of Noche de San Juan (St. John’s Night). Preparations begin with the creation of an effigy and the collection of old furniture, firewood, and similar items, which are brought to the Old Castle.

There, a tripod is built, from which the effigy, symbolically carrying away all negative things people wish to leave behind, is hung above a pile of collected wood. At midnight, the figure is raised to the top of the tripod and the bonfire is lit, while people sing and dance around it until the early hours of the morning, along with the concerts.
