Interview
We visited ClimberUp Pedriza, a craft workshop dedicated mainly to the repair and rental of climbing shoes, sneakers and hiking boots. We are welcomed in their premises by Sofía Cordero and Alfonso Sánchez, both lovers of nature, of the mountains, a substantial part of the heritage and emblem of Manzanares El Real: “A town with a lot of life, very diverse and that has welcomed us wonderfully”, Sofía tells us.

After a life of travelling (their previous residence was in Switzerland, another cradle of mountaineering), they needed to return to Spain with the desire to reunite with family and their good friends. Sofía, from Madrid, Alfonso, from Cordoba; both with a bond felt by climbing, of which they have made a trade and profession, as we will now see.

The beginnings in Manzanares

After evaluating different destinations, they landed in Manzanares, in search of the best place to live and establish their business. A place that had to have certain peculiarities: “Life in the countryside, the tranquility and the nearby climbing,” says Sofía. “Here, we find it, an unbeatable town where all kinds of climbing are practiced,” says Alfonso, and adds: “The granite landscape of La Pedriza once upon an international level, in many ways.”

This is how we get to the point of asking how and why they decided to become “resoladores”, certainly an artisan trade that is not too widespread. The answer leads us to the resolution of a vital equation that we should all consider: combining profession, vocation and passion.

Why ClimberUp? What does it offer us?
Alfonso and Sofia are desolate (not shoemakers in the traditional sense). Both learned the trade from one of the pioneers, at a national level, in the manufacture and artisanal repair of climbing shoes and mountain footwear: José Carlos Arenal, a resident of the municipality and who under the protection of the ClimberUp brand (with 8 stores in Spain and 2 abroad) accumulates more than 30 years of experience providing the best practice to climbers, mountaineers, hikers and runners. “We couldn’t have had a better teacher,” says Sofía. Thanks to technique and applied knowledge, Sofia and Alfonso can now give more life to our climbing shoes.

“Normally, climbing shoes have between six and seven repair possibilities,” Alfonso informs us. Of course, it is important to indicate to climbers that for the footwear to be durable, the repair should not be postponed until the final wear of the sole. That is why ClimberUp patented the wear indicator, which serves, among other things, to know when the climbing shoe needs to be repaired on the toe or its lower part.”

Other services
In addition to the handmade, non-industrial repairs of footwear, ClimberUp also rents this specific footwear, essential for climbing.
“Soon,” they tell us, “we will also provide climbers with crash pads, the mattresses that are used in the practice of bouldering.” (Climb rocks that are large enough to be climbed and small enough that you don’t need a belay rope to overcome them.) They also collaborate with the commercial fabric of Manzanares, for example, “Hostel, La Pedriza” is a collection point for the material for the repair.
