Our past and present identity
lives on through the culture of Manzanares El Real,
expressed in visual and performing arts, as well as in the special
events which became symbols of the town.
Since 1935, Manzanares El Real has been the chosen setting for numerous unforgettable film productions, including El Cid, Jeromín, Alexander the Great, The Fall of the Roman Empire and Conan the Barbarian.
Among the more than 100 recordings, renowned actors and actresses have walked the streets of Manzanares El Real, such as Fernando Fernán Gómez, Carmen Sevilla, Sara Montiel, Clint Eastwood, Concha Velasco, Rocío Dúrcal, Sophia Loren and Arnold Schwarzenegger.
One particularly important location is known as El Rodaje, a natural site nestled between the rocky areas of El Canchal and El Rincón, leading up to El Yelmo. It became a favorite set for major Italo-American westerns, where some of the original props and scenery can still be found today.
The Manzanares River, La Pedriza, the New Castle of the Mendoza family, and the Santillana Reservoir have been much more than mere “supporting actors” in the remarkable history of cinema.
Due to this strong connection with film, in the 1960s the town opened its own cinema in the former Parador. Today, it continues to host the municipal cinema El Rodaje, named in honor of this emblematic landscape.
Visitors can also explore this cinematic legacy at the exhibition hall A Cinematic Village in the Ethnological and Archaeological Museum, supported by Alfonso Pozuelo Ruano and the Cultural Association El Real de Manzanares.
On the fence surrounding Prado Puente, a large-format outdoor photography exhibition has been installed to promote art in the open air.
Retrospectives of artists, photojournalism, wildlife photography, winners of the contests held during the La Pedriza Film, Mountain and Adventure Festival, as well as other thematic exhibitions—all these can be enjoyed in Prado Puente through rotating temporary exhibitions.
Come and visit it ! you won’t be disappointed.
Culture comes alive in the streets of Manzanares El Real. Throughout the year, together with our residents, we organize multiple events that will enrich your visit to the town, including performances and productions in the “El Rodaje” Hall from our former historic parador, or the popular mountain and film themed La Pedriza Festival.
