The bull in art painting through the centuries

It is not only a path for the cattle, it is a permanent exhibition where the bull, painted on granite monoliths, is the protagonist.

Cordel de los Toros

What has traditionally been the path used by the bulls in transhumance in Manzanares El Real in search of new pastures, is today a space recovered from disuse that shows the history of the bull in a very special way.

Between 2008 and 2010 the Town Council, in collaboration with the Area of Livestock Trails of the Community of Madrid and the Biodiversity Foundation, carried out an artistic project of recovery of the Cordel de los Toros (Track of the Bulls) which consisted in decorating it with granite slabs showing the history of the bull through painting and sculpture.

The area was also repopulated with native trees and shrubs with recreational and walking areas, making it an ideal outdoor place both for recreation and cultural visits.

Cattle farming and culture

Because our culture comes from traditions, because cattle farming is one of our most ancestral traditions.

Our livestock has been key to the development of our society, both economically and culturally, and if there is one symbol which represents our culture over time compared to others, it is definitely the bull.

Honoured in arts such as literature, sculpture and film making, it has been through painting that its representation has accompanied us along our history trail, from the Palaeolithic to the present day, on incredible cave walls or on large linen canvases.

In this space of the Cordel de los Toros we pay homage to this magnificent animal and its artistic figure, recreating in large granite slabs some of the most well-known bull representations, from prehistoric times to our famous painters. The impetus to recover one of the main cattle routes in our municipality, the Cordel de los Toros, led to several important side actions. Other than the pictorial decorations to honour the bulls that used this route, the erosion it had suffered over time made it clear that it was necessary to repopulate the area with native vegetation, to restore some of its former splendour and transform it into a place of leisure and nature.

Thanks to the recovery project carried out, along the walk you will be able to enjoy trees such as holm oaks, oaks or ash trees, shrubs such as our beloved rockrose and strawberry trees, and aromatic plants from the area such as thyme, lavender and rosemary.

Of course, the little ones have more than enough space here to play, and the tireless ones can use our machines to exercise or train in the Running Circuit that runs along this path.
