{"id":2493,"date":"2025-09-23T18:48:44","date_gmt":"2025-09-23T16:48:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/openideas.site\/manzanareselreal\/que-ver\/%que-visitar%\/fuente-de-las-ermitas\/"},"modified":"2026-02-09T11:29:50","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T10:29:50","slug":"fountain-of-the-hermitages","status":"publish","type":"que-ver","link":"https:\/\/manzanareselreal.org\/en\/what-to-see\/fountain-of-the-hermitages\/","title":{"rendered":"Fountain of the Hermitages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the Ca\u00f1ada Real Segoviana, the Fountain of the Hermitages was one of the key infrastructures for water supply in Manzanares El Real, and for all livestock and travellers passing through the area.<\/p>\n<p>Its construction was ordered by the man who finished the New Castle, the Second Duke of the Infantado, Don \u00cd\u00f1igo L\u00f3pez de Mendoza, and the fountain collects water from a natural spring that has been flowing for more than 500 years.<\/p>\n<p>Its special location opposite the New Castle, on one of the most important cattle routes on the peninsula and, although now disappeared, between two hermitages where La Mesta used to meet, speaks of the importance it once had.<\/p>\n<p>In the restoration undertaken at the source by the D.G. of Cultural Heritage of the Community of Madrid, in 2021, it was discovered that the watering hole was accessed by a 4-meter-long road, made with large slabs of carved granite, which allowed the collection of water saving the land permanently irrigated by the spring. Currently we can see a section of this road that continues, below the wall that closes the complex, under our feet. The local livestock had to take advantage of the high pastures by going up La Pedriza, and were taken back at night to <em>La Dehesa<\/em> and <em>El Ejido<\/em>, close to this fountain. The large herds of the Council of La Mesta also passed by the fountain as they travelled along the glen on their transhumance route from the north to Extremadura. The fountain also played its role as a service for the locals and passers-by.\r\n\r\nAs a whole, we can see in the background the spring house, which is reached by two underground channels that carry the water from a natural spring located in the north. The interior of its cubic structure, made of enormous granite ashlars bonded with lime mortar and sand, is cleaned through an arched doorway closed by a grille.<\/td>\r\n<td width=\"400\"><img class=\"alignnone size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/manzanareselreal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/47-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"100%\" \/><\/td>\r\n<\/tr>\r\n<\/tbody>\r\n<\/table>"},{"que_ver_contenido_acordeon_titulo":"Natural spring","que_ver_contenido_acordeon_descripcion":"<table cellpadding=\"20\">\r\n<tbody>\r\n<tr>\r\n<td>The water supplied to the fountain by the natural spring all year round for more than 500 years flows from the spring house to the trough through a millrace lined with granite pieces.\r\n\r\nOn the front, the monumental trough made of monolithic granite blocks, up to a metre high, is crowned by a pediment of ashlars with a triangular lintel on which we find the coat of arms of the Mendoza and Luna families, which is much deteriorated. This coat of arms was created after the union of Don \u00cd\u00f1igo L\u00f3pez de Mendoza, Second Duke of the Infantado, and Do\u00f1a Mar\u00eda de Luna, heiress of the Constable Don \u00c1lvaro de Luna. In fact, the House of the Infantado was for centuries one of the key powers in the livestock association, which made this town a rich territory, thanks to the use of the Manzanares toll bridge and the control of good rented pastures for the cattle on their journey through the Real.\r\n\r\nThe hermitages were often located next to the glens, as they were the place chosen for the meetings of the Mesta Council.
