Since 1935, Manzanares El Real has been the setting chosen to film numerous unforgettable blockbusters, including \u2018El Cid\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Jeromin\u2019<\/em>, \u2018Alexander the Great\u2019<\/em>, \u2018The Fall of the Roman Empire\u2019<\/em> and \u2018Conan the Barbarian\u2019<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Particularly important is the place known as \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em> (The filming), a natural space located between the rocks of El Canchal<\/em> and El Rinc\u00f3n<\/em>, to the north of the municipality. Formed by extensive esplanades and large hills that lead up to El Yelmo<\/em>, it was the favourite location for the filming of Italian-American western blockbusters, where some of its structures and props are still preserved.<\/p>\n

\r\n\r\nThe first film known to have been filmed in our town is \u2018La hija del penal\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, shot in 1935<\/em><\/strong>, in which our castle is turned into a prison with a lot of wardens to watch over a single prisoner, Antonio Vico, who plays the leading role and falls in love with the daughter of the prison director, which will be closed on the death of the prisoner.\r\n\r\nIn 1944<\/em><\/strong>, another western film was shot in La Jarosa<\/em>, curiously enough made by Germans in the middle of the Second World War. But due to the end of the war after the surrender of Germany, the film was not finished as the entire film crew disappeared leaving behind numerous debts.\r\n\r\n\r\n
La hija del penal<\/div>\r\nThe Castle of the Mendoza family became a natural setting for many films, just like the river and La Pedriza rocky outcrop, where \u2018Oro vil\u2019<\/em><\/strong> the first Spanish western film was shot.\r\n\r\nIn 1947<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018La princesa de los Ursinos\u2019<\/em><\/strong> with Ana Mariscal and Roberto Rey in the leading roles was shot, and the following year, in 1948<\/em><\/strong>, with the Castle as the setting, \u2018Locura de amor\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was shot, a classic of our cinema, with Fernando Rey and Aurora Bautista in the leading roles.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

La Duquesa de Benamej\u00ed<\/div>\r\nIn 1949<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018La Duquesa de Benamej\u00ed\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was filmed in La Pedriza and \u2018Alas de juventud\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was filmed in the town. \r\n\r\nIn 1950 \u2018Balarrasa\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was filmed, with Fernando Fern\u00e1n G\u00f3mez; and in 1952, \u2018La laguna negra\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. In 1953<\/em><\/strong>, a film about bandits, was shot in El Tranco<\/em>, the Hermitage and La Pedriza<\/em>, \u2018Carne de horca\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, which tells the adventures of the bandit Lucero, who kidnapped for ransom, which reminds us of true stories that took place in La Pedriza<\/em> in the 19th century. The other film from that year is \u2018Jerom\u00edn\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, also shot in the Castle.\r\n\r\n\r\n
Jerom\u00edn<\/div>\r\nIn 1954<\/em><\/strong>, came \u2018Coraza negra\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, the first swashbuckler film set in the Castle. These films of knightly adventures made some neighbours sleep without mattresses, as they rented them for 25 pesetas per day to break the fall of the actors from the battlements of the Castle.\r\n\r\nIn the film \u2018El Coyote\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and its sequel, \u2018La justicia del Coyote\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, some shots were filmed in the reservoir, another attractive spot in our town, which would sometimes become an ocean, a lagoon or a sea, as appropriate. In the same year \u2018Nosotros dos\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was shot, a film that many locals have on video, because it was entirely filmed in the village and can be considered a documentary, as in addition you can see what the village looked like in that year, and many of the locals, some no longer with us.\r\n\r\nIn 1955<\/em><\/strong>, with the castle in the background, \u2018La fierecilla domada\u2019<\/em><\/strong> with Carmen Sevilla, the thriller \u2018Nunca es demasiado tarde\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, and a comedy by the great actor Jos\u00e9 Luis Ozores, \u2018Recluta con ni\u00f1o\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, were filmed.\r\n\r\nIn 1956<\/em><\/strong>, the super-production \u2018Alexander the Great\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was shot, with Richard Burton in the leading role, and inwhich many extras were needed, paid at 600 pesetas a day per rider and horse. In the same year, this time near the Hermitage and La Pedriza<\/em>, \u2018La vida en un bloc\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was also filmed. Jos\u00e9 Luis Ozores repeated in 1957 with the film \u2018El aprendiz de malo\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. From the same year is \u2018The Pride and the Passion\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, which was known in the town as \u2018El gran ca\u00f1\u00f3n\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (the big cannon) because of the cannon that was used in the set, starring Cary Grant, Frank Sinatra, Sofia Loren and Carlos Larra\u00f1aga.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

La venta de Vargas<\/div>\r\nIn 1958<\/em><\/strong>, La Pedriza was the location for the filming of \u2018La rebeli\u00f3n de los gladiadores\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, and \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em> and the Mill for \u2018La venta de Vargas\u2019<\/em><\/strong> with Lola Flores. \u2018Llegaron dos hombres\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, is from the same year, this time filmed in the town and in the Charca Verde<\/em> bar. \u2018Molokai\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, in which the reservoir simulated the sea and its shores an island of lepers. The protagonist of the film is Padre Dami\u00e1n, and the little boy, who died shortly afterwards, was a child of the village. The film aroused such fervour among our inhabitants that some time later one of the streets of our village was named after the main character. The year ends with a fantastic film, \u2018The 7th Voyage of Sinbad\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (Sinbad and the princess<\/em> in Spanish), in which we can see a fight against a cyclops and some two-headed giant vultures which live in La Pedriza.\r\n\r\nIn 1959 \u2018Carmen la de Ronda\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Sara Montiel. Then came the blockbuster \u2018Spartacus\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Kirk Douglas, Laurence Olivier and Tony Curtis among others. \u2018The Last Days of Pompeii\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (\u2018Gli ultimi giorni di Pompei\u2019<\/em> in the original), with Esteve Reeves, and \u2018Solomon and Shaba\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Yul Brynner and Gina Lollobrigida, closed the year.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>"},{"que_ver_contenido_acordeon_titulo":"...1969","que_ver_contenido_acordeon_descripcion":"

El pr\u00edncipe encadenado<\/div>\r\nIn 1960<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018El pr\u00edncipe encadenado\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was filmed, in which many locals returned to work as extras. Plaster annexes were built to the castle and people also remember that to give the impression that there were lots of soldiers, they would come out several times in a row from behind a set that imitated the castle and walk in front of the camera. A neighbour, Santiago M., known as Santiag\u00f3n, was hired as captain of soldiers and was given a short skirt with his armour. His white legs had barely seen the sunlight apart from what his trousers filtered through, and after take, after take of riding under the summer sun he got sunburnt. But he did justice to his name and did not miss any shooting. The film director was full of admiration and could not understand how he had been able to put up with so much. The last film shot that year was \u2018La rebeli\u00f3n de los esclavos\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.\r\n\r\n\r\n
El Cid<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\r\n
\r\n\r\nAgain, in 1961<\/em><\/strong>, more cinema classics were shot. \u2018The Cid\u2019<\/em><\/strong> with the Castle and \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em> as settings, and Charlton Heston and Sofia Loren in the leading roles. \u2018El Coloso de Rodas\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, in which our reservoir is once again the sea, this time the Mediterranean Sea. \u2018King of Kings\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a super-production in which the village of Nazareth was recreated in \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em>. \u2018De Ursus\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a film with muscular warriors, Antonio L. remembers that all the professional wrestlers in Madrid came as extras. On one occasion, one of them, Ochando, gave him an affectionate blow that knocked him senseless and scared. In the same year Fernando Fern\u00e1n G\u00f3mez\u2019s \u2018La venganza de Don Mendo\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was also filmed.\r\n\r\nIn 1962<\/em><\/strong> more movies with muscular warriors were filmed: \u2018Il gladiatore invincibile\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Goliath contro i giganti\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018I sette gladiatori\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and an adventure film, \u2018El valle de las espadas\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Espartaco Santoni.\r\n\r\nIn 1963<\/em><\/strong>, a western, Gringo<\/em><\/strong>, and another adventure film, \u2018El caballero negro\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, gave way to \u2018La chica del tr\u00e9bol\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, filmed in the Castle and in the village, and starring Roc\u00edo D\u00farcal. To round off the year, another great blockbuster, \u2018The Fall of the Roman Empire\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, starring Sofia Loren again.\r\n\r\nIt was in 1964<\/em><\/strong> when a long series of western films began in Colmenar Viejo, where a set had been built to recreate a village of the American Wild West. Many scenes from these films were shot in our town. \u2018Aventuras del Oeste\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Fuera de la ley\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Joaqu\u00edn Murrieta\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018La tumba del pistolero\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Los rurales de Texas\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and \u2018Antes llega la muerte\u2019<\/em><\/strong>. In the latter, a gold prospectors\u2019 village was built in the Cortecero Rill!\r\n\r\nWesterns continued in 1965<\/em><\/strong>. \u2018El s\u00e9ptimo de caballer\u00eda\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018El zorro cabalga otra vez\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, which was known here as \u2018La Pimpinela de California\u2019<\/em>; \u2018La ley del forastero\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Minnesota Clay\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; and \u2018Los tres invencibles\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, of a different genre than the previous ones.\r\n\r\n1966<\/em><\/strong> continues to mark the boom in Westerns. The following films were shot in La Pedriza: \u2018Django\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018La muerte cumple condena\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Mestizo\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Un hombre y un colt\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and the famous \u2018The Good, the Bad and the Ugly\u2019<\/em><\/strong> with Clint Eastwood (\u2018Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo\u2019<\/em> in its original title). Also from the same year are the comedy \u2018A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum\u2019<\/em><\/strong> (\u2018Golfus de Roma\u2019<\/em> in Spanish) and the war film \u2018Lost command\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, starring Anthony Quinn, Alain Delon and Claudia Cardinale.\r\n\r\n\r\n
El bueno, el feo y el malo<\/div>\r\nDuring 1967<\/em><\/strong> and 1968<\/em><\/strong> the production of westerns and its spaghetti sub-genre continued: \u2018Texas, addio\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018La resa dei conti\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Los despiadados\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018The vengance of She\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, not released in Spain; \u2018Land Raiders\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Bandidos\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Faccia a faccia\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Tutto per tutto\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018The Desperados!\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Custer of the West\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u201815 forche per un assassino\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; \u2018Uno dopo l\u2019altro\u2019<\/em><\/strong>; and \u2018Villa Rides\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, known here as \u2018Villa cabalga\u2019<\/em>.\r\n\r\nIn 1969<\/em><\/strong> the Western genre began to decline due to the saturation of titles, but \u2018Kidnapping! Paga o uccidiamo tuo figlio\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Manos torpes\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Una lunga fila di croci\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and the unreleased in Spain \u2018A talent for loving\u2019<\/em><\/strong> were still filmed. Sol rojo<\/div>\r\nIn 1970<\/em><\/strong> some Westerns were still being shot: \u2018Un par de asesinos\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, \u2018Cannon for Cordoba\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and \u2018Red Sun\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Ursula Andress, Charles Bronson and Alain Delon taking part in the latter. Also from that year are \u2018Julius Caesar\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, known here as \u2018The Assassination of Julius Caesar\u2019 and filmed in the vicinity of the Canto del Berrueco<\/em>, starring Charlton Heston, and \u2018The Horsemen\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, starring Omar Shariff, in which the surroundings of the reservoir are used to represent the territory of Afghanistan.\r\n\r\nIn 1972<\/em><\/strong> we find the following titles: \u2018El Quijote cabalga de nuevo\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a comedy by Mario Moreno Cantinflas filmed in Canto del Berrueco<\/em>; \u2018Antony and Cleopatra\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Charlton Heston as director and star; and \u2018The Man Called Noon\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, for which a stone hut was built in \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em>, and then eventually burnt and of which there are still remains.\r\n\r\nIn 1975<\/em><\/strong>, the film \u2018Potato Fritz\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was shot, an ecological western filmed by Germans, for which a camp was set up in \u2018El Rodaje\u2019<\/em>.\r\n\r\n<\/div>\r\n

Conan el b\u00e1rbaro<\/div>\r\nFrom 1981<\/em><\/strong> is the well-known \u2018Conan the Barbarian\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, where we can see, but not recognise because he was covered, Dionisio on his chariot pulled by cows with big horns taking Conan captive. \u2018La hija rebelde\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was also filmed in the same year.\r\n\r\n\r\n

\r\n\r\nIn 1983<\/em><\/strong> the western returned with \u2018Al oeste de r\u00edo Grande\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with shots in Charca Verde<\/em>, and \u2018Hundra\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a female version of Conan, in which the sets and costumes of the latter were used.\r\n\r\n1984<\/em><\/strong> brings us two comedies: \u2018Al este del oeste\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Fernando Esteso, Antonio Ozores and Juanito Navarro, and \u2018La Biblia en pasta\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, by Manuel Summers.\r\n\r\nTwo films of the fantasy genre mark 1985<\/em><\/strong>: \u2018El caballero del drag\u00f3n\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Klaus Kinski, Fernando Rey and Miguel Bos\u00e9, and \u2018Tex e il signore degli abissi\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, based on a comic book.\r\n\r\nDuring 1986<\/em><\/strong>, two westerns are shot simultaneously in Canto Cochino<\/em> and Charca Verde<\/em>: \u2018Apache Kid\u2019<\/em><\/strong> and \u2018\u00a1Sclaps! Venganza india\u2019<\/em><\/strong>.\r\n\r\nIn 1987 \u2018Hot Blood\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was filmed and in 1988<\/em><\/strong> the reservoir was used in some shots of \u2018Esquilache\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, in which Fernando Fern\u00e1n G\u00f3mez, J. L. L\u00f3pez V\u00e1zquez, \u00c1ngela Molina, \u00c1ngel de Andr\u00e9s, Concha Velasco and Adolfo Marsillach, among others, took part.\r\n\r\n\r\n
El regreso de los tres mosqueteros<\/div>\r\nThe film \u2018The Return of the Three Musketeers\u2019<\/em><\/strong> was shot at the Castle during 1989<\/em><\/strong>. It starred Michael York, Oliver Reed, Franck Finlay, Richard Chamberlain and Christopher Lee. A pit was needed for the filming, and during the excavation a suspicious bone was found, which kept filming at a standstill until it was confirmed to be that of a dog. \r\n\r\nDuring 1990<\/em><\/strong>, some episodes of two television series were filmed: \u2018El Quijote\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, with Fernando Rey and Alfredo Landa, and \u2018El Zorro\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, a North American production.\r\n\r\nIn 1996<\/em><\/strong>, specifically in the Quebrantaherraduras<\/em> site, sequences of the Spanish comedy \u2018Airbag\u2019<\/em><\/strong> were shot.\r\n\r\nFor the exterior scenes of the 1998<\/em><\/strong> film \u2018Los a\u00f1os b\u00e1rbaros\u2019<\/em><\/strong>, La Camorza<\/em> was used as the background for a model recreating the construction of the Bas\u00edlica del Valle de los Ca\u00eddos<\/em>.\r\n\r\n\r\n
